According to Xinhua news agency, Australia experts said recently that the most extensive coral bleaching phenomenon has occurred in the Great Barrier Reef, which shows that it is urgent to deal with climate change.
Terry Hughes, director of the coral reef research project center, and other researchers from James Cook University, Australia, recently announced that a team of 1036 reefs in the great barrier reef area were observed from the air in the last two weeks of March, and large-scale bleaching was found, especially in the south of the Great Barrier Reef for the first time. This is also the first time that serious albinism has been found in most of the northern, central and southern parts of the Great Barrier Reef.
The researchers say that coral bleaching is a color change caused by changes in sea water temperature, and many corals die when bleaching is severe. The researchers plan to dive later this year to assess in detail the coral damage caused by the recent bleaching.
The Great Barrier Reef, which runs through the northeast coast of Australia, is the largest coral reef group in the world, with a total length of more than 2300 kilometers. In recent years, large-scale bleaching of coral has occurred in the Great Barrier Reef due to climate change and other reasons. In addition, the Great Barrier Reef is threatened by marine pollution.
