The southernmost fjord of New Zealand's South Island is in a state of emergency due to extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, the New Zealand civil defense ministry said Wednesday.
A short period of heavy rainfall caused the river to surge, and the main highway 94 in and out of the fjord area was destroyed. Nearly 400 people were trapped, mostly tourists.
The Chinese Embassy and consulate in New Zealand are actively verifying whether there are Chinese citizens among those who are trapped.
Fjord area is one of the most famous tourist areas in New Zealand, adjacent to Queenstown. Fjord area is located in the core area of the South Alps, where there are many snow mountains, rivers and lakes, and the road and bridge facilities are relatively weak.
